2008 STATEWIDE NRCS/SCD EARTH DAY ACTIVITIES

 

Bismarck/Mandan, North Dakota

Name of event:  Earth Day Celebration – “One World, One Chance”

Date and time of event:  Earth Day, April 22, 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Location of event:  Raymond J. Bohn Memorial Armory, Bismarck

Brief description:  This multi-agency sponsored event will have activities for all ages.  Some of the fun activities for youth include a soil tunnel, coloring booth, face painting, an interactive rain forest exhibit, etc.  Guest speakers will talk about recycling, rain gardens and native landscaping, energy conservation, and conservation in agriculture.  There will also be environmental door prizes, free trees, free reusable grocery bags, educational booths, teacher resource area, hybrid vehicle display, and a compact fluorescent light bulb promotion.

Linton Field Office, Emmons County, North Dakota

Name of event:  Grocery Bags in our local towns

Date and time of event:  Earth Day Week April 21-25

Location of event:  County schools and local grocery stores

Brief description:  Students in Linton, Hazelton, and Strasburg in grades K-6 will be asked to decorate paper grocery bags and they will be distributed to the local grocery stores.  The schools enjoyed the placemat activity last year, so we are going with the bags for this year’s activity.

LaMoure Field Office, Lamoure County, North Dakota

Name of event:  City/highway clean-up

Brief description: The LaMoure Field Office is planning a city/highway clean-up with the 4th - 6th grade Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, assisting them to earn an environmental badge.

Name of event:  Fargo/Moorhead (FM) Green Expo

Location of event:  Southwest Youth Arena, Fargo 

Brief description:  Attendees will learn ways to take responsibility for a clean and healthy environment, visit with exhibitors, and attend seminars.  The FM Green Expo is intended to be a place of exploration and to help the FM community become better informed consumers.

Name of event:  Party for the Planet

Date and time of event:  April 19th, 12 pm – 4 pm

Location of event:  Red River Valley Fair, Fargo

Brief description:  Attendees will learn ways to take responsibility for a clean and healthy environment, visit the zoo exhibits, and participate in kid-friendly activities.  A free shuttle bus will operate between the FM Green Expo and the Party for the Planet.

Name of event:  Rain Barrel Workshop

Date and time of event:  April 29th, 6 pm – 8 pm

Location of event:  Living Lab, Fargo

Brief description:  Attendees will construct a rain barrel from parts supplied during the workshop.  Participants need to register through Moorhead Community Education after March 13, 2008.

Brief description:  Static displays will be set up at the area malls during the Earth Week celebration.  A press conference will kick off the event on April 18th at 2 pm at the Moorhead Center Mall.

Mohall Field Office, Renville County, North Dakota

Name of event:  Earth Day-Renville County

Date and time of event:   Week of April 21

Location of event:  M-L-S Mohall grade school, M-L-S grade school Sherwood, & Glenburn grade school

Brief description:  Renville SCD & NRCS go to the schools & do a short presentation (20 Min.) on "Conserving Natural Resources."  The fourth grade students are the ages concentrated on.  We bring paper grocery bags from the local Super Valu to have the students decorate with Earth Day themes.  After the project is completed, they return the bags to the grocery store for the local grocer to display.  Students then each receive a 2008 Earth Day t-shirt from Renville County SCD.  It's has been successful and very well accepted by the students and teachers.

Ft. Totten Tribal Office, Benson County, North Dakota

Name of event:  Earth Day - Tree Planting

Date and time of event:  Week of April 21, specific date not determined

Location of event: Ft. Totten, Spirit Lake Reservation

Brief description:  Plans are to do a memorial tree planting around the Ft. Totten Pow Wow Arbor.  An additional tree planting will be done for Tribal elders.

Bottineau Field Office, Bottineau County, North Dakota

Name of event:  Tree Planting

Date and time of event:  Last Day of School.  May 23, 2008

Location of event: Carbury Dam

Brief description:  This is an annual event scheduled with Bottineau School.  NRCS, Turtle Mountain SCD, and North Dakota Forest Service invite 8th grade students from Bottineau School to plant trees at Carbury Dam.  Trees are planted to improve aesthetics and control erosion on the surrounding shore.  Turtle Mountain SCD donates 200-300 evergreen trees to be hand planted by the students and teachers.  NRCS or North Dakota Forest Service gives a brief demonstration of tree planting techniques and the reason for the event.
